BEST was founded in 2002 by the late U Nay Win (1935-2014). U Nay Win was a devout Buddhist who wanted the Buddhist teachings to flourish. Not only was he an accomplished teacher of Buddhism, he also practiced meditation regularly as well as being an active philanthropist. He was particularly keen to provide the four essentials (robe, shelter, food and medicine) to rural monasteries where needs are greatest. U Nay Win said "Where there is already plenty of water there is no need for rain but in areas where water is scarce let the rain of metta (loving-kindness and generosity) pour down."
U Nay Win worked tirelessly travelling to remotest parts of Myanmar to support monasteries where needs are greatest. He was also keen to support education for orphans and underpriveleged children. Although he has left us, his legacy lives on.
